Shipyard Spotlight: Adrian Morris, Insulation Shop Supervisor Supporting USS Gerald R. Ford Planned Incremental Availability

Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Adrian Morris, an Insulation Shop (Shop 57) Supervisor currently supporting topside and propulsion plant work on the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) project, has been with NNSY for 10 years. Morris started out at NNSY as an apprentice with Shop 57 and graduated three months early. He is enthusiastic about his team’s work on the Ford Planned Incremental Availability.

Morris was nominated for the Shipyard Spotlight by NNSY Insulation Shop Work Leader Hung Sze.

“One of Morris's greatest strengths is his ability to motivate his team. He leads by example, fostering a positive and productive work environment. His encouragement and recognition of hard work inspire everyone to perform at their best. Whether through hands-on guidance or structured training, he is always willing to teach and mentor, ensuring that his team members grow both professionally and personally,” said Sze.

Morris says the most rewarding part of his job is helping others learn and his team succeed “whether I’m helping an apprentice acquire and maintain the necessary knowledge and skills to become a mechanic or helping a mechanic become a work leader,” said Morris. “From a team standpoint, it is always doing what needs to be done to aid and assist in getting the boat out ahead of schedule or on time.”

Sze said Morris consistently goes the extra mile for his team.

“What truly sets Morris apart is his dedication to his crew. He is not just a supervisor but also a supportive leader who takes the time to understand his team's needs. His hands-on approach with both practical tasks and paperwork ensures that everyone is well-equipped to succeed. Without a doubt, he is the best supervisor any crew could ask for,” said Sze.

As passionate as Morris is about his job, it comes with its difficulties.

“Hands down, managing individuals is a big challenge,” said Morris. “Learning what motivates each team member, combined with different personalities and working habits, mixed with different initiatives from upper management is very challenging to navigate, but you find your footing and get used to it.”

He tackles challenges by breaking them down into segments and uses the same approach with his team when they are faced with a large job.

“Set daily goals and achieve them,” said Morris. “These increments will turn into small wins and eventually become milestones.”

Morris describes his leadership style as “lead by example.”

“A good leader is someone who is self-aware, accountable, respected, adaptable and honest,” said Morris. “Someone who communicates well and understands their own strengths and opportunities and can effectively translate those qualities into getting the best version out of others to achieve the desired results.”

Taking “lead by example” to heart, Morris encourages anyone interested in working at NNSY to apply.

“The shipyard was definitely an adjustment for me as most of my previous work experience was in warehousing,” said Morris. “Not as fast-paced, but equally physical and demanding on the body.”

Morris continued, “If you are willing to consistently put in an honest day’s work, you can build a rewarding and stable career at NNSY.”

The best career advice Morris ever received was to be “firm but fair.”

“Firm but fair! These words were given to me by the late Shop 57 Continuous Training and Development (CTD) Instructor Ricky Chappell, who tragically went to heaven this past year. Back when I was an apprentice, and he was still a mechanic, while working together on the USS San Francisco (SSN 711) Project, he told me to keep my eyes on the prize and stay focused. To always have integrity because one day I would be supervising and leading my peers,” said Morris.

When Morris isn’t at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, grilling, playing basketball, jogging and listening to music.

“I’m a huge Jay-Z fan when it comes to music. He is my favorite rapper, but I would say Drake is probably my favorite artist. As far as basketball is concerned, Lebron is the GOAT, and I enjoy watching basketball at all levels, especially the NCAA tournament. I’m a big University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC) Tar Heels fan. When it comes to football, Bang Bang Niner Gang (San Francisco 49ers),” said Morris.
