Council to pursue Common App as Kentucky’s statewide college application provider

At its business meeting in Owensboro, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education approved pursuing Common App as the statewide platform to meet the requirements of House Bill 307, the My Kentucky Future Act. The law directs the Council to establish a common online application and maintain a website for students to apply to Kentucky public postsecondary institutions through that application.
Common App, a national non-profit organization, is already widely used by Kentucky students, with over 9,500 applicants and 65,000 applications submitted to member institutions last year. The platform is free to students, offers robust support—including 24/7 help and a mobile app—and connects eligible applicants with scholarship opportunities. Real-time dashboards and reporting will help colleges track progress and trends, supporting the state’s college access and workforce goals.
“HB 307 takes a major step toward removing the barriers that keep too many of our students from pursuing education after high school,” said CPE President Aaron Thompson. “By proactively notifying students of where they qualify for admission, and giving them a simple, common application to take that next step, we are encouraging thousands more young Kentuckians to see college as an attainable and expected part of their future. This is exactly the kind of systemic shift that will help us reach our 60x30 attainment goal and strengthen the Commonwealth for decades to come.”
CPE will feature the Common App link within Futuriti.org, ensuring a seamless path from exploration to application as students consider their postsecondary options. Futuriti houses Kentucky-specific career and education resources and supports the state’s goal of increasing college-going and credential attainment.
In other action, the Council approved new academic programs at the University of Kentucky, including B.F.A. and B.A. degrees in Creative Writing (CIP 23.1302) and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership in Coaching and Sport (CIP 31.0504). The MS program offers two tracks—Coaching and Sport Leadership—preparing graduates for leadership roles across athletics, sport operations, and community-based sport organizations.
