University of Oxford and UNESCO launch free online course on Freedom of Expression for Judicial Actors

UNESCO and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at the University of Oxford are launching a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to support the judicial in gaining specialised knowledge on protecting freedom of expression. The target audience includes judges, prosecutors, lawyers, members of judicial training institutes, law students and all members of the judicial community. Building on the successful engagement of more than 11,000 judicial actors in the 2021 and 2023 editions, the third reiteration of the course will run for five weeks starting from 5 October 2026.

Divided into five modules, the MOOC seeks to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the international legal framework governing freedom of expression, access to information and the safety of journalists. It also covers the implications of emerging digital technologies and evolving legal threats to journalists, while empowering them to strengthen the protection of these rights in law and practice.
