Governor Abbott, TWC Announce Over $212,000 Job Training Grant To Navarro College

AUSTIN ⎯ Governor Greg Abbott today announced a Skills Development Fund (SDF) grant award totaling $212,520 to Navarro College in partnership with Leggett & Platt Inc. Through this grant, Navarro College will provide customized training for 72 new and current workers at Leggett & Platt for high-demand careers in industrial electricity and manufacturing.

“Texas is leading the nation in growth, and it is critical that we maintain a strong, skilled workforce to meet the needs of our booming state,” said Governor Abbott. “This grant will provide customized training to develop the skills needed to fill high-demand jobs in growing fields to build a more prosperous Texas.”

“In the North Central Texas region, jobs in the manufacturing industry are expected to grow by 7% by 2034, highlighting the strength of local employers and their demand for a highly skilled workforce,” said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. “This Skills Development Grant award of $212,000 to Navarro College and Leggett & Platt serves as a prime example of how businesses can use TWC resources to create customized training and prepare for their future growth.”

Earlier today, TWC Chief Deputy Director of Workforce Development Mahalia Baldini presented the award to representatives from Navarro College, Leggett & Platt, and other local partners during a ceremony held at Navarro College in Corsicana.

SDF is the state's workforce training grant program to help businesses upskill their new or incumbent workforce. In partnership with the public community and technical colleges, workforce development boards, and Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, TWC collaborates to provide customized, innovative training to Texas businesses of all sizes.

The SDF grant program has provided training opportunities in partnership with more than 5,000 employers to upgrade or support the creation of over 446,000 jobs throughout Texas since the program's inception in 1996.
