The company is placing particular focus on the upgraded Kaiser 4 Series and a practical consequence of hybrid learning: students may use the same computer across several study environments, but the desk and seating relationship can change each time.

The latest data available through the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics shows that 53.8% of postsecondary students were enrolled in at least one distance-education course in fall 2024. The figure was based on reporting from 5,615 postsecondary institutions.

Distance education does not mean that every student studies entirely from home. It indicates that a substantial share of college learning now combines physical campuses with work completed through computers in other locations.

A student may attend an in-person class, complete an online module in a library, join a discussion from a dormitory and finish an assignment at a family desk. The laptop can move between these environments, but desk height, desktop depth and available legroom may differ substantially.

Hybrid Learning Has Made the Desk Less Predictable

Most ergonomic workstation illustrations assume that the chair, keyboard and work surface can be configured together and then left in place.

That assumption becomes less reliable when study takes place at more than one desk.

A fixed dormitory desk may be higher than a home workstation. A shared dining table may have a thick edge or limited space underneath. A compact study desk may require the laptop or keyboard to sit farther forward. Even when two work surfaces have similar overall height, their shape can change how close the chair can move.

OSHA states that keyboards or working surfaces positioned too high or too low can contribute to awkward wrist, arm and shoulder positions. It recommends adjusting chair and work-surface height so the elbows remain close to the body, approximately level with the keyboard, while the shoulders remain relaxed.

OSHA’s workstation purchasing guidance also notes that fixed-height desks may require additional adjustment measures to accommodate different users. For laptop and tablet use during prolonged typing, it recommends an external keyboard and input device so the display and typing position are not permanently tied together.

Students cannot necessarily rebuild every temporary study surface. The chair therefore becomes one of the components available for reducing the mismatch.

Six-Dimensional Arm Support Responds to Different Desk Edges

The first Kaiser 4 feature emphasized in this release is its upgraded 6D armrest system.

The armrests provide 7 cm of vertical adjustment and 4 cm of forward-and-back movement. The pads rotate through 180 degrees, while the complete arm structure can rotate through 360 degrees. The system also provides a 20-degree upward pad angle and up to 18 cm of lateral positioning through its rotational structure.

These movements address different parts of desk compatibility.

Vertical adjustment can bring the arm support closer to the keyboard level. Forward-and-back movement changes where the forearm meets the pad when the chair cannot move completely beneath a desk. Rotation allows the armrests to follow different forearm directions or move away from a desktop edge.

The lateral range can also change the space between the two arm supports when a user moves from a compact laptop keyboard to a wider keyboard-and-mouse arrangement.

CCOHS advises that armrests should be adjustable to approximately elbow height and should not interfere with movement within the workstation. It also notes that poorly positioned armrests can prevent a chair from moving close enough to the desk.

The Kaiser 4 armrests are not intended to compensate for every unsuitable table. Their purpose is to provide more options when the work surface cannot itself be altered.

Independent Lumbar Adjustment Addresses Changes in Desk Distance

Desk height is only one source of variation. The distance between the user and the work surface can also change.

At a deep desktop, the monitor and keyboard may be positioned farther away. At a shallow desk, the user may sit closer to the equipment. A fixed drawer, desk apron or thick edge can also limit how far the chair moves forward.

These differences affect the relationship between the torso and the backrest. A student sitting closer to a laptop may use more upright or forward-oriented back contact, while viewing a lecture or reading may allow more of the torso to settle into the chair.

The upgraded Kaiser 4 uses an elastic locking gas spring to control a lumbar section that extends through a 24-degree range. The mechanism can lock at any selected angle instead of limiting the user to several preset positions.

Inside the pop-out structure, separate controls provide 76 mm of vertical adjustment and 30 mm of depth adjustment.

These controls divide the lumbar setting into three questions:

How far should the complete lumbar section extend?
Where should the support contact the back vertically?
How pronounced should the internal lumbar depth feel?

This separation is relevant when the same chair is used with more than one desk arrangement. The lower-back position can be changed without requiring the armrests, seat height or backrest angle to follow the same setting.

CCOHS recommends that chair backrests provide lumbar support while remaining appropriate for the user’s dimensions and activity. It also emphasizes that no single chair is suitable for every task and that workstation components must be considered together.

Recline and Head Support Cover Different Study States

The Kaiser 4 provides backrest recline up to 135 degrees and a 15-degree rocking mode with adjustable tension.

These functions can establish different seated states within one study environment.

A more upright configuration may be used during typing, spreadsheet work or detailed editing. A moderate recline may be selected for recorded lectures, reading or reviewing completed work. Rocking allows smaller changes around the selected position without requiring the backrest to be reset completely.

The magnetic memory-foam head pillow can be moved vertically across an approximately 20 cm attachment range. Its position can therefore be changed when the backrest angle or the user’s sitting height changes.

These features do not replace standing, walking or active breaks. They provide variation during the periods in which the student remains seated.

OSHA notes that no single posture or workstation arrangement will fit every person. Its computer-workstation guidance instead recommends identifying areas where component placement and adjustment can be improved for the individual user.

Stable Controls Matter When Settings Change Frequently

A highly adjustable chair is useful only when its selected positions remain predictable.

The Kaiser 4 armrests use three control buttons and locking points intended to hold the chosen arrangement after adjustment. Grooves in the arm pads provide a defined grip area for one-handed repositioning.

The gas-spring lumbar mechanism similarly separates deliberate release and adjustment from the locked support position. AndaSeat’s official specifications state that the lumbar system provides a 24-degree pop-out range together with any-angle locking and four-way internal adjustment.

The chair also includes a 6.5 cm seat-height range, an SGS Class 4 gas lift, an aluminum wheelbase and polyurethane-coated casters. Size options are intended to cover users across approximately 150–210 cm, subject to the selected L or XL configuration and individual body proportions.

These structural elements establish the platform beneath the armrest and lumbar controls. The objective is not movement for its own sake, but repeatable adjustment when the desk or study task changes.

Back-to-School Preparation Now Includes Workstation Adaptability

Hybrid education has made the student workstation less permanent.

NCES data showing that more than half of postsecondary students take at least one distance-education course indicates that computer-based study remains integrated into mainstream higher education rather than operating as a temporary exception.

For households preparing for the academic year, this creates a different furniture question. The issue is not only whether a chair fits one ideal desk. It is whether the chair provides enough independent adjustment to remain useful when the student’s work surface, equipment layout or study activity changes.
