UN Raises Alarm Over Strike on Luhansk College Dormitory

(MENAFN) The United Nations has voiced serious concern over reports of a deadly attack on a college dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region of Ukraine, according to reports.

Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council session, Edem Wosornu, director of operations and advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said the strike “caused scores of civilian casualties, including children.”

“The human cost of this war reveals a pattern that defies international humanitarian law,” Wosornu said. “Civilians must be protected.”

Reports indicate that the attack killed six people and wounded dozens more, including children.

Wosornu also noted that since February 2022, nearly 16,000 civilians have been killed and more than 44,000 injured in Ukraine, adding that the real toll is likely significantly higher.

Separately, Vanessa Frazier, the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy for children and armed conflict, said the UN has been closely monitoring reports from Luhansk, which she described as temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.

She said an overnight strike on a vocational school and dormitory in Starobilsk “killed and injured several people, including children.”
