Death Toll Rises After Drone Strike Hits College in Luhansk Region
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities from a drone strike on a college building and dormitory in the city of Starobilsk in the Russia-controlled Luhansk region has risen to 18, according to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry.
Officials said a total of 60 people were injured in the incident, which caused the collapse of a dormitory at Luhansk Pedagogical University. Three individuals are still believed to be trapped under the rubble as rescue efforts continue.
Emergency services remain deployed at the site, with regional authorities providing assistance, including psychological support to victims and families.
Leonid Pasechnik, the Russia-installed administrator of the region, said rescue operations were ongoing and described the aftermath as “terrifying hours of waiting,” expressing condolences to the families of those killed.
Authorities in Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out the strike on the academic building and dormitory in Starobilsk and announced the opening of a terrorism-related criminal investigation, calling the incident a “monstrous crime.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attack and instructed the Defense Ministry to prepare proposals for a possible response.
