Turkish university student secures first place in tech competition in Portugal

(MENAFN) A Turkish university student has secured first place at a major technology competition in Portugal, thanks to an AI-driven travel app inspired by his time abroad.

Yusuf Yilmaz, currently studying computer engineering at a university in Istanbul, created the application after encountering difficulties during his five-month exchange program across Europe. His time in Portugal as an Erasmus student served as the catalyst for developing a tool to assist travelers in learning more about their destinations.

The app, which functions as an interactive cultural guide, integrates games and quizzes to promote engagement. It was awarded the top prize in the "Gamification" category at a leading international event focused on software and innovation, according to reports.

By using GPS and real-time data, the application delivers location-based trivia and challenges designed to encourage users to explore and learn about nearby historical or cultural spots. Currently accessible as a web-based demo, the developer aims to release a mobile version in the near future.

According to him, “Last year, I traveled across various European countries during my Erasmus stay in Portugal. I enjoyed learning about the cultures of the places I visited—that’s where the idea came from,” he said.

Reflecting on his achievement, he added, “Winning first place was my dream since last year. This was my second time joining the competition. I also participated while I was an Erasmus student. The hospitality I experienced there drew me in. Even before last year’s competition ended, I had already made up my mind to return this year. I completed the project and presented it to the jury—and I won.”

Yilmaz explained that manually creating content for each location would have been too time-consuming. Instead, he turned to AI to streamline the process. As he noted, language models “can work like a human, generating reliable information,” he said. “A regular user can do this with AI — and so can my app.”
